When developing the design for clear width between finger piers, an additional 2 to 4 feet should be added to each boat beam for clearance and fendering. The amount of extra clearance provided is a design issue related to : type of boat, wind and wave exposure, water current velocity, and amount of water area for development. Fairway: The general rule of thumb has been to make the clear distance between boat extremities (fairway) no less than 1.5 times the longest boat length, and often 1.75 times boat length if conditions warrant.
